The Ranch - A Chronicle

Bob&Nancy

"The Ranch" as they call it for now, was purchased in the fall of 09. Bob called an old phone number he had of someone who owned tracks of land in Florida and Georgia, to see if a 40 acre track was still available that he and Nancy saw a few years ago. The man said that piece of land was sold, but he had another piece further north for him to see. Bob picked this piece they now call the Ranch. After seeing it, Nancy thought Bob hit the bull's eye with this choice! They will have it paid off in 178 months! This "Chronicle" will be an account that includes videos & pictures, chronicling the development of "The Ranch". You can click on the numbers below to see the evolution of the visits, #1, #2, etc.

#1 December 09' - After The Sale - The first visit was the first time Nancy had seen The Ranch! It gets very cold north of the panhandle, and they camped out in 30-50 degree weather for 4 days, and put up two gates and did other work. They met a local sheriff too after the first night to report that a local punk pushed one of the gates in - the locals had used the "road" through the property for 30 years as if it were a public road, and maybe someone was disgruntteled since they put up a gate; But, Bob and (really) Nancy hoped it was just an honest accident. Bob is the realist. Anyway, they fixed the gate and left. They were very anxious to see if all would be well when they returned. Before they left, they prayed over each gate and anointed it with oil while they prayed. God is always faithful. When returning a few months later, there was no more damage.

#2 January 10' - Bob Alone - It's a very coooold January, 2010 & Nancy is very glad that Bob winded up going alone because it was 2 days of camping in 17 degree weather, sleeping in the truck! During the trip up, the small "cameo" trailor Bob was pulling came unhitched, but a passer-by waved him down. The chains he put on held, thank God! When Bob got to The Ranch, he cut a 400' trail from the prospective electric pole into where he wanted the path of electric to be. He also set up a canopy in the clearning, dug out all the stumps at the camp, built a little out-house, and hid the generator in the woods. Finally, he met with electric company officials and got information about the process and the requirements to get service where they wanted it.

#3 March 10' - Spring Is Here - It's mid March. This was a long 5 day trip. They worked on removing trees and visiting many county offices to take care of business. First they met with a forester to arrange a "Management Plan" that had to be written and submitted to get an agriculurual tax exemption on the land. Then, a trip to the clerk's office to file the late exemption request - woops! But, fortune would have it that they met the Property Appraiser right in the hallway and she directed them accordingly. They filled out their form, went to the clerk's office to file the petition; and while they were there, got the original documents from the county concerning the sale (just to have them from the source). They then went to the electric company to get their new board minutes & ruling that told them how much the electric company would do for free, and how much they would have to pay. Oh, and a quick trip to the public library to use the computers to check the bank account. These trips cost, but they are working it into their budget gradually. Then, it was off to the well drillers to sign a contract and leave a $500 deposit to get the well dug. They are going to make payments, then they will drill when they have it paid up. They worked removing trees for a path and destination in the woods for the (yet to be determined) trailor/rv/mobile home; they put out bait to kill red ants; and Bob made a plow out of a tree trunck with stubs and dragged itaccross the ground to smoth a road to drive on. It was a very busy trip.

#4 April 10' - Fire Flies and Work! - It's mid April. This was a quick trip. Bob and Nancy went to a convention on Homeschooling, then continued on to the Ranch to camp for two nights. The brush was markedly thicker. As the sun set and darkness fell, all of a sudden scores of fire flies appeared! It was a new experience and really neat to see. A dim (and the only) light was evident about a mile down the road. It was a neighbor's barn, they must have just put it up. When they drove by the area the next day, they made eye contact with 2 farmers and waived - for the 1st time. The tent had been left up for a month, so it was a little dusty with a resident wasp starting a small nest outside under a small flap, but that was removed. This trip, they cleanned all the supplies, recorded inventory, and spent about 6 hours (Bob did) building a head (bathroom). Bob also practiced shooting with the 22 rifle. They saw two really fat rabbits run by, and Nancy saw a few very huge bumble bees. They torn down the camp canapy in order to put up another larger one, but ran out of time and will put it up next time. They left very early when it was still dark, on the second morning in order to stop and fish on the long drive home. A Tree Farm Management Plan had been ordered for $200 and was confirmed recieved by the appraiser's office about a week ago (for an agricultural tax exemption). The county said they will send a formal document that the expemption is granted. A second $500 payment was given to the well company; and still, no decision has been made on the path of the electric.

#5 June 10' - Quick Visit - It's June 1st. They were only able to briefly stop by the Ranch after a business trip.. The visits are not as frequent because it costs a lot to go up and work and stay away from home, and they are prepaying the well and need to save. Here's some nature shots on the Ranch.
